A striking teenager from Sweden is spearheading the climate change movement for the world.
She leads protests, spoke at the UN, and traveled the globe spreading the urgent message of climate change and the effects on the collective.
Yes, a young person is leading the fight against the largest threat to humanity.
Her name is Greta Thunberg.
Rather than world leaders (aka adults) taking bold action in front, she is doing it.
She is the one making a ruckus. She is the one making change.
Why? And how does she do it?
I began to notice and wonder as I watched her enthrall the world. And to those who are not enthralled, I watched as she pissed them off to no end.
Her impact is powerful and great no matter which way you slice it.
I watch her and the adults around her. What does she do? What does she believe? What are the adults in her life doing? How do they act and what do they value?
What I realized is that Greta lives the pillars of Mindful Music. Not only that, the adults in her life do too.
Greta embodies autonomy.
She thinks for herself. She knows herself. She makes her own decisions. She takes responsibility for her life and her impact. She knows that everything is a choice. She is not swayed by the masses. She stands firm in her individual beliefs, thoughts, ideas and heart.
She celebrates herself and her unique gifts. She embraces her autism and Asperger’s syndrome as assets. She is not someone who in her own words “follows social codes”.
She is fully, unabashedly herself and remains true to who she and what she believes through her actions.
Greta embodies awareness.
She places a high value on not only her self-awareness, she highly values the expansion of her awareness in her field of interest. She obsesses about learning and staying up to date with climate change. She is constantly seeking clarity and information for the evolution of the planet. She knows her style of communication, her challenges, her strengths and demonstrates this deep awareness by describing it.
She doesn’t hide from reality, rather she runs right toward it within herself and with climate change. She has the ability to notice things and based on what she notices, consciously choose a response.
Greta embodies expression.
She combines her individual thought with her awareness and shares it with the world. She knows that her voice matters so she uses it. She shares, she speaks, she “dares greatly” as Brené Brown would say. She consistently shines her unique light of truth around the globe.
Holy wisdom batman.
I immediately looked to the adults around her.
The adults embody autonomy.
They know themselves and their individual ideas and are rooted in themselves. They aren’t scared of her power because they are in their own power. Because of this, they can hold space for her and support her to rise.
They honor her ability to make her own choices because they believe that she is equal, that the power of choice lies in every human, not just adults. They believe in truth of the individual rather than the status quo.
Because the adults in Greta’s life celebrate their own autonomy, they celebrate hers.
The adults embody awareness.
They are self-aware and seek awareness of the issues and world around them. Their awareness of themselves allows them to show up in a supportive way to not only have their unique voices shine through, they extend this to Greta to help her awareness rise. Using awareness, they allow Greta to strengthen hers independently rather than telling her what's going on. They let her notice.
The adults embody expression.
The adults surrounding Greta express their ideas, knowledge, awareness and unique voice with the world too. They show an example of sharing what’s important to them and the value of this individually and the impact out into the world.
Their belief in the importance of expression is extended to Greta in that they value her expression just as much as their own.
Greta's impact is a result of her heart-led living that has been fostered by the mindful adults around her.
She is living her highest expression of herself and sharing her unique impact with the world in truly amazing ways. This is something many adults dream of and never do.
This isn’t happening on accident.
Key adults in her life hold the space for her to do so and fostered these pillars and values.
They saw her heart and held her, lifted her, allowed her to grow.
They live autonomy, awareness and expression and in doing so were able to gift it and support it in her.
They know their own genius and they don't block hers.
Imagine if her parents told her, “No, you can’t, you’re just a kid.” Imagine if they didn’t value her ideas. Imagine if they didn’t see her as an important contributing member of the world.
Imagine the loss for Greta. Imagine the loss for the world.
I believe everyone can be like Greta and can inspire the inner-Greta in others too.
If you’re an adult and you are still looking for that part of you, it’s never too late.
In Mindful Music, I equip my students with the pillars of autonomy, awareness and expression to rise into their unique potential and voice.
With my coaching clients, I support the rise of the voices of each teacher based in these pillars through the lens of mindfulness to create the reality they truly desire. In doing so, teachers not only transform themselves, they gain the tools to support this rise in their students.
